WATER: AN ESSENTIAL RESOURCE IN THE PRODUCTION OF HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY

The word “water” instantly reminds us of the liquid we drink to quench our thirst or that we use to carry out household chores such as dish washing, laundry, cooking and cleaning. As humanity celebrates World Water Day on Friday, March 22, 2024, it is necessary to reflect on the importance of water beyond our basic needs.

For example, water is essential for irrigation purposes in agriculture and consists of 90 percent of Cameroon’s hydroelectric sources.

Water also plays an important role in the production of electricity, is a source of green energy (renewable energy) and one of its cheapest sources. Water is also an essential resource to Electricity Development Corporation (EDC), which has the responsibility to manage our nation’s dams.
